I highly value your contribution. There are two considerations I would like to raise for further consideration...

Firstly our hope for widespread Christian revival and its capacity to impact culture. I am not sure what you mean by the code words: "Some sections of the Christian community are still hoping for a return of Christendom". I for one am not looking for re-establishment of something from the past but a new release by God of a powerful expression of the Kingdom of God coming through a renewed church to provide God breathed influence into the leadership of every attribute of society. This would of course parallel the aspirations and teaching of Abraham Kyper in the Netherlands in the early 1900s.

Secondly I wish we could develop new language to replace the bad idea of a "post-christian era". Christ is not dead nor in any way reduced by Christian ignorance in secular society. Rather the lights are going out in the enlightenment and without revival desent into a new dark age is accelerating. We need some new language that reignites hope in Christ rather than convey an inference that Christianity is over and the future is without hope. Thanks.

Re: Would Jesus have worn a mitre? It looks ridiculous and it seems to imply that the person wearing it is lording it over the rest somehow. It seems to me to be out of place in the Anglican church and does not fit with the tenor of the prayer book or God's Word. Leadership that thinks their problems would all be solved if they are able to get the "right people on the bus." Jim Collins etc leadership books should be banned from church leadership talks and replaced with Outliers: story of success by Malcom Gladwell
2. Making a clear message complex, a burden overwhelming and a vision unsustainable.
3. Pastoral care is not a valued trait

Re: Rebuilding in the ruins of the Church

I think we need to go to the root of the problem here.

In the 1500's we Protestants departed from the teaching church which Christ established, and which Christ promised would teach his truth untill the end. We replaced this with 'supremacy of individual interpretaion of the written tradition'.

We ignored the fact that all written tradition is originally oral tradition, and that the writtten tradition is simply oral tradition which has become recorded in written form. We ignored the fact that all oral tradition was seen by the Apostles as guaranteed by Christ and fully binding on the believers. We ignored the fact that through the oral tradition thousands were converted, before one word of NT Scripture was even produced.

We ignored the fact that in NT times there weren't individuals running around interpreting the Scriptures and forming seperate groups, but rather believers remained in communion with the authority of the teaching church.

How Christ must weep when he sees 60,000 (and growing) seperate groups all claiming to have arrived at the truth through private interpetation of Holy Scripture.

Our problem is our departure from what Christ established and guaranteed would teach his truth. Our problem is that we have departed from Christ's body- his church.

This has caused us to follow OUR OWN ideas about Christian belief and the meaning of Scripture, rather that the ACTUAL belief of the early church and their knowledge of the NT writings.

It frieghtened me when I first thought it, but I think (despite what has been drummed into me) that the Catholic Church is that church of Christ, and we have departed from it to our peril.
It is certainly one in official teaching, holy in the heroic individuals over the centuries, catholic in it's membership, and apostolic in belief and succession.

I am seriously moving toward a "return home"

Sincerely

Doug McIntyre

Re: The New Atheists: Their Myths and Beliefs

This is precisely the kind of rhetoric that Christians use to attempt to rationalise their beliefs with the real world.
Peter Corney attempts to convince the reader that Atheism is founded on a myth. Ingenious really, when you consider the foundations for his belief.
‘New Atheism’ is a ridiculous term in itself. The non-religious should not even have a name. Atheism, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities, pre-dates christianity and no doubt all types of organised religion. The term would have only come into the vernacular because most people were under the rule of religion and the religious rulers would have needed to brand the dissenting individuals with a name that would invoke fear and distrust with those so labelled. “Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs.” (Sam Harris)

You can also thank the comfortable lifestyle you are now enjoying for ‘The Enlightenment’. Christians only have to look to their Muslim counterparts to observe what life would be like if the church still controlled our political system to the same extent that it once did. The notion that most of the scientific discoveries can be attributed to clergy is disingenuous as, anyone who cares to, understands the prevailing religious attitudes throughout history and the fact that most endeavours requiring financing had to be sanctioned by the church.
Corney asserts that Atheism has ‘borrowed’ its ethical values from Christianity; it has not borrowed them from any religion. Human decency precedes Christianity. One of the constants with all religions , including the many pre-dating christianity is the ‘Golden Rule’ or as christians love to quote but often fail to follow, ‘treat others they way you would like to be treated’.
This is an example of the narcissism required to believe in christianity, that a god created the world with you in mind, has an ultimate plan for your life and listens to your thoughts and cares about your personal habits. This and the belief that a god would choose a nomadic, mostly illiterate, desert dwelling tribe to inscribe an infallible perfect book to which all life’s lessons are to be learned.
This attitude produces an astonishing mix of confidence and ignorance. Most christians don’t read the very book that they profess to be the foundation of their own moral code. (save perhaps for the snippets of scripture as instructed to read and then expanded to meet certain agendas by those perpetuating the myth).
Corney tries his best to connect atheism to totalitarian regimes. These are just more examples of the Cult of Personality that includes Christianity and in Hitler’s case he has been quoted on numerous occasions as professing a Christian belief, - My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple - Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922 where do you think his murderous anti-Semitism stems from?
Quoting Dostoevsky’s ‘If god did not exist, everything is permissible’ is another example of Christians attempting to reassure each other in their questionable logic. Is it therefore to be assumed that without a deity to worship Christians would simply lose all moral restraint? This type of logic instills fear into the religious when regarding the non-religious.
Corney uses the examples of ruthlessness and murder on a grand scale of his chosen despots, but he could just as easily be describing the church. Plus the question that no Christian apologist has been able to answer satisfactorily, why did god do nothing? (particularly when it was being done in his name)
When we are determining the truth of a proposition we either make an honest appraisal of the evidence using logic and reason, or we don’t. Religion is one subject where believers and indeed the public at large imagine that some other standard of intellectual integrity applies. This leads to the ludicrous situation, because religion has been sheltered from serious criticism, that people believe collectively what only the deranged would believe in isolation.

Re: The New Atheists: Their Myths and Beliefs

Great article.

Re: The decline in the Australian Protestant Church – How we got to where we are.

hi,,i m born again,,in christ my name is job david,,i m converted ,,GOD HAS OPEN MY EYES ND SHOW ME THE LIGHT ND BRING ME TO THE LIGHT,,BUT NOW WAT CAN I DO FOR MY KIDS,,,BCOZE AS I HV READ IN BIBLE THAT ONLY CHRISTIAN NAME IS NOT INOFF,,WE HV TO READ THE HOLY BIBLE EVRY DAY,,LIKE A DAILY BREAD,,,SO NOW MY KIDS IN THE MUSLIM SCHOOL VRY DEFICULT TO TEACH THEM ND BRING THEM TO HOLY BIBLE STUDY,,SO PLEASE IF U ALL CAN HELP ME IN THIS MATTER ,,PLZ SAFE THE CHILDREN OF JESUS CHRIST,,,ND THERE IS SOME PEOPLE BEHIND US TO KILL US,,,WAT CAN I DO,,,WE R SAFE ONLY IN THE GOD HAND,,,I HOPE U WILL UNDERSTND MY WORDS,,,THANKS,,,KEEP US IN PRAYER ND I WILL B WAITING 4 U R POSITIVE ANSWER,,,,,,MY ID,,,,GURISHINE7@YAHOO.COM

Re: Belief in an Age of Unbelief – responding to the “New Atheism”

Please find a completely different Understanding of the relation between scientism (as distinct from science as a method of open ended free enquiry), and reductionist exoteric religiosity via these references.

http://science-and-religion...

http://www.dabase.org/chris... Einstein meets Jesus

http://www.adidam.org/teach...

http://www.aboutadidam.org/... on the baneful limitations of the now world dominant ideology/paradigm of scientism, in which we now ALL trapped with NO exceptions ( including, and especially the folks at the Centre For Public Christianity)
